Joyce (Buckley) Sowder

Joyce (Buckley) Sowder, died Saturday evening April 20, 2024 at Advinacare in Newburyport, MA. She was born in Newburyport on October 20, 1936 to the late Timothy and Nellie “Pink” (Dow) Buckley. Raised and educated in Newburyport she attended Newburyport High School before marrying her former husband Charles Sowder, Sr.

Joyce was employed by various local shoe shops, followed by Sylvania, and Bailey’s Corporation as a laborer. She was then employed by Salter Transportation as a Bus Driver, helping residents get to their jobs with Opportunity Works, until her retirement in 2008.

In her spare time she enjoyed trips to Foxwoods with her family, and playing Bingo and Keno. Spending time together at family outings held a special place in her heart.

Joyce is survived by her children, Linda Sowder of Seabrook, and Charles Sowder, Jr and his wife Dottie of Indiana; grandchildren, Jeffrey Stines, and Tammie Thompson; great grandson, Braylon Thompson; siblings, Carolyn Levesque, Rena Arnold, James Buckley and his wife Wilma, Ruth Hoyle and her husband Bill; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents Joyce was predeceased by her siblings, Ralph Buckley, Franklin Hank Buckley, Gloria “Sissy” Minasian, Hazel Joubert, William Buckley, Arthur Buckley, and George Buckley; as well as her best friend and sister-in-law Carol Brown Buckley.

Family and Friends may call from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Tuesday April 23, 2024 at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950. Her Funeral Mass will follow at 12:30 PM at Immaculate Conception Church, burial will be private at a later date.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Joyce’s name to the charity of ones choice.
